يٰۤاَيُّهَا الۡمُزَّمِّلُۙ‏ ١ قُمِ الَّيۡلَ اِلَّا قَلِيۡلًا ۙ‏ ٢ نِّصۡفَهٗۤ اَوِ انْقُصۡ مِنۡهُ قَلِيۡلًا ۙ‏ ٣ اَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ الۡقُرۡاٰنَ تَرۡتِيۡلًا ؕ‏ ٤ اِنَّا سَنُلۡقِىۡ عَلَيۡكَ قَوۡلًا ثَقِيۡلًا‏ ٥ اِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ الَّيۡلِ هِىَ اَشَدُّ وَطۡـاً وَّاَقۡوَمُ قِيۡلًا ؕ‏ ٦ اِنَّ لَـكَ فِى النَّهَارِ سَبۡحًا طَوِيۡلًا ؕ‏ ٧ وَاذۡكُرِ اسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ اِلَيۡهِ تَبۡتِيۡلًا ؕ‏ ٨ رَبُّ الۡمَشۡرِقِ وَالۡمَغۡرِبِ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِيۡلًا‏ ٩

Al-Qur`an 73:1-9

O you [O Prophet] folded in garments! Stand all night [in prayer] except a little. [Pray] half the night, or a little less, or a little more—and recite the Quran in a measured and distinct way. ˹For˺ We will soon send upon you a weighty revelation. Truly, rising by night [tahajjud] is more impactful [for heart] and to make speech more upright. Surely in the daytime you are occupied with lengthy duties. And remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. The Lord of the east and the west; there is no god except He; so take Him for [your] guardian.

Allahﷻ directed Prophet Muhammadﷺ to rise and pray in the hours of night. This revelation which came down during early Meccan time set the stage for further messages that were soon to be revealed. A preparation for the struggle to come. An advice from The All-Knowing (ٱلْعَلِيمُ). For this preparation, Prophetﷺ used to rise up during the night hours when everyone was still asleep. Perform ablution (wudu) for prayer and recite the words of Al-Qur`an very distinctly, slowly and stand long hours of the night in submission to our creator, Allahﷻ.

كَانُوۡا قَلِيۡلًا مِّنَ الَّيۡلِ مَا يَهۡجَعُوۡنَ‏ ١٧ وَبِالۡاَسۡحَارِ هُمۡ يَسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡنَ‏

Al-Qur`an 51:17-18

They used to sleep but little of the night. And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness.

Waking up at night and praying is very powerful for the self. As Allahﷻ says this practice makes a powerful impact and impression. The words of our Lord piercing through our hearts and strengthening it from its core. As we go on about our day this impact keeps us focused and dialed in towards our objective. عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ يَنْزِلُ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا حِينَ يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرُ يَقُولُ مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ مَنْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَأُعْطِيَهُ مَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ ‏”‏‏.‏

Sahih al-bukhari 1145 (Book 19:26)

Narrated Abu Hurairaؓ : Messenger of Allahﷺ said, “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?”
